Grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of back teeth are caused by normal tooth development. They can however, be extremely difficult places to clean, particularly for children who have not mastered adequate brushing techniques. Sealants protect these areas by “sealing out” plaque and food, and therefore lessen the chance of tooth decay. Once determined that sealants would be beneficial, the application of a sealant is quick and easy and requires no drilling or freezing. After the teeth are cleaned, treated and dried, the sealant is “painted” into the grooves. It is then hardened with a curing light to form the protective coating.
